Our choreography is based on the two traditional disciplines – artistic and rhythmic gymnastics. This combination has morphed into an extension called Aesthetic Group Gymnastics. We no longer compete. Instead, we are considered a performance team taking part in the Canadian and World Gymnaestrada events which occur every four years.
We do not use artistic apparatus IE. bars, beam, vault. Instead, we perform a synchronized group floor routine. Occasionally we have incorporated small hand apparatus, such as scarves or rhythm sticks, into a routine.
Practices
What do our practices look like?
Team practices are held 2x/week from September through June and broken down into different phases.
Initially, the practices are relaxed even though they are structured. At this time focus is on stretching, basic and simple dance steps and movements often including sequences from previous routines. This is the time where we experiment with new ideas and possible elements for future routines.
The next phase in the process is the choreography and building of routines. This is the longest and most difficult part (testing everyone’s patience). There are frequent element and floor pattern changes and the repetition is tedious.
The final stage of preparation focuses on correcting specific moves and sequences as well as building up our cardio stamina. Repetition is key. This phase helps to fine tune synchronicity and uniformity.
Also at this time, a third practice is added as we get closer to performance time.
